What is Mohs Surgery?
Victorian Dermatology & Surgery specialises in Mohs micrographic surgery which is the most advanced and effective treatment for skin cancer available with a proven cure rate of 99%. All our doctors have undergone extra training to become skilled experts in performing Mohs procedures.
Mohs surgery completely removes cancerous tumours using a procedure that minimises scarring and conserves original tissue. As a result, it is typically used for sensitive areas or parts of the body of high cosmetic importance such as the face.
Mohs surgery is also often used to treat high risk tumours that other treatments have failed to eradicate. In this group of cancers, cure rates for Mohs surgery patients is 92% compared to 60% with other more traditional surgical procedures.
Mohs surgery is performed by removing the cancerous tumour layer-by-layer. As each layer is removed, it is examined under a microscope in real time until it is confirmed that the entire tumour has been eradicated. Because tumour analysis occurs in the same session as the surgery, the patient does not need to wait for any test results. And because the operation works at a microscopic level, surrounding normal healthy tissue is left intact and unharmed.
At Victorian Dermatology & Surgery, Mohs surgery is performed by our specialist surgeons who have completed training as both dermatologists with the Australasian College of Dermatologists and the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS).
